Team England Sports Ambassador Visits The Academy

Students at Folkestone Academy were given the opportunity to meet with Commonwealth Games Bronze Medallist, Owen Boxall. Owen is a Weightlifting champion, taking third in the recent Commonwealth Games Men’s 105kg category.

During the session with Owen, students watched him deliver a demonstration with his weights bar as well talking about his diet and nutrition and training programme.  He also spoke about how he came to start about weightlifting and his achievements throughout his career.

Mr David Allen, Director of Sport at the Academy, organised the visit, he comments: “This is the best part of my job, in that we as a department can offer our students time with sport ambassadors like Owen to inspire and encourage students to think about trying new sports and pushing themselves outside their comfort zones. Owen was a great role model in showing what hard work and determination can achieve!”

A Year 9 student comments: Owen’s talk was really interesting, especially the part where he talks about the drug testing procedure and how athletes are ensuring they are clean and that no rules are being broken.

Owen comments: “I really enjoy visiting schools and talking about my sporting experiences to young people. It’s definitely a great way to give back and work with students, offering them advice on how to start their journey. The Academy students were very engaging and asked some great questions.”
