What is AEN?

AEN stands for Additional Educational Needs.

Essentially the AEN Faculty is here to assist students to succeed academically, socially and economically.

Inclusion Development Programme

4 year programme
  • First year is language (incl dyslexia)
  • Second year is ASD
  • Purpose is to improve and increase WAVE 1 provision.
  • Compulsory for ITT

What is Inclusion?

  • Includes G/T, SEN, EAL
  • …is about equal opportunities for all pupils, whatever their age, gender, ethnicity, attainment and background. It pays particular attention to the provision made for and the achievement of different groups of pupils within a school.

Levels of Inclusion

Wave 1
  • Differentiation within the classroom. Most effective, legal requirement and part of professional standards. (IDP) Differentiation includes learning styles
Wave 2
  • Support from Teaching Assistants, agency
Wave 3
  • Intensive, personalised small group intervention programme, such as literacy.

History of SEN

  • Baroness Warnock asked to write a report on inclusion within Education. (1972)
  • Prior to this report, students had a Health problem and had zero access to education
  • 1973, Education Minister (Baroness Thatcher) creates SEN provision and funding for all students.
  • Concept of ‘Statement of Need’ invented

  • IDP (Inclusion Development Programme) as part of NATIONALSTRATEGY

SEN Levels

School Action (A)
  • Students who are slightly behind their peers. May need support / differentiation within classroom
School Action Plus (A+)
  • Intervention programmes, use of outside agencies
Statement of Need (S)
  • No funding, but required number of hours. Annual review. (file very thick)
  • Only now to be used if considering Special school entry
